flatheads.net – a website dedicated to classic wired earbuds – those compact earphones that were extremely popular in the early 2000s but have been unfairly pushed aside by the rise of modern in-ear monitors (IEMs) and true wireless (TWS) earphones.
Not only they lost the popularity but also their name has been borrowed and never returned. When Apple released its wired EarPods in 2012, the company started calling them “earbuds” – and continued doing so for every subsequent model, including the wireless AirPods TWS. Eventually, almost all TWS manufacturers followed this example.
Because of this shift in terminology, the original, classic earbuds are now distinguished by being called “flat-headed earbuds” or simply “flatheads”, highlighting their defining feature – the flat front surface of the earpiece.
